How To Successfully Manage Your Time + Free Weekly Planner

We all know that mom life can get extremely overwhelming. Just between yourself and your kids, there is so much to be done. Add in a significant other, a home, maybe a pet, school, a job… So many responsibilities, so little time. Our to-do lists often spill over to “tomorrow”.

So how do you get the most out of the day and also keep your sanity intact?

I haven’t mastered the art of time management quite yet but I have noticed definite improvement. I feel better and much more accomplished every day. It can be difficult to get used to, especially if you normally just wake up and go, but it gets easier by the day. Check out these 7 steps to help manage your time more effectively.

I also have a printable weekly planner for you at the end of this post, so don’t miss out!

Get An Early Start

If you are not a morning person, you’ve got to become one. Try to spend the first 30 mins of your morning reviewing what needs to be done for the day and think about how you are going to utilize your time. Life is just so much smoother when you have a clear plan of action.

Sleep

Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night so you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start the next day. If you over work yourself and don’t get enough rest, it sets the tone for the next day and slows everything down. You also will have more trouble getting an early start if you don’t get enough sleep to begin with.

Focus

Unplug from the world until you are done with the task at hand. Set your phone to do not disturb, turn off the TV and really focus on finishing what you’re working on. Learn how to say no to the things that distract you.

Prioritize

Figure out what tasks are most important and make it your mission to complete those first. It also helps to determine what needs to be done vs what you want to get done. For example, don’t check and respond to emails if you have a paper you need to turn in the next day. Paper first, emails second.

Start Small

Sometimes the reason it takes so long to get something done is because we try to tackle the project from start to finish. We get really tired or bored  of it half way through and regard the task as mundane. The way to avoid that is to split up your time; work for a set amount of time, take a break, go back to work. It also helps to break one task into multiple… narrowing your focus to something more “do-able” and not daunting can really change your outlook on finishing.

Get Organized

I recently came across the power of planners and they are a time management must have for me. Writing things down will help you get (and stay) organized. You are less likely to forget things when you write them down and if you do forget, you can always look at your schedule/planner to be reminded. I used to use a year planner but I found that having a more detailed weekly planner system worked better for me. I was able to laser in and focus without getting overwhelmed with all the things. If that sounds like something that would work for you, check out the weekly planner printable (size A4) I currently use below.
